The Virtual Museum

Learning From Your Own Home

Inspiring students with new educational materials will become increasingly important as homeschooling continues to evolve in a post-COVID world. With this in mind, the 5G Labs team recently sourced the Smithsonian’s Open Access collections and created a new set of virtual museum exhibitions that can inspire and educate our students during these difficult times.

To expand on this effort, Verizon and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s Interaction Lab will be requesting proposals from creators for interactive tools that redefine the way people visit, engage with, and learn from museums. The Creative Explorations with Smithsonian Open Access will award $10,000 commissions to up to six teams to build working prototypes.

Equipped with over 2.8 million 2D and 3D assets from the Smithsonian’s Open Access program, the 5G Labs team selected a unique group of exhibit items, researched their background information, and narrated their findings to help create a 21st-century museum experience. The augmented reality exhibitions combine teachable moments with playful interactions to make any lesson more memorable.
